Glasgow golfer John Paterson will have a former Open champ watching him at the Scottish Boys Championship after he surged into the quarter-finals at windy Murcar.

On a good day for the remaining local hopefuls, the 16-year-old eased to a 7&6 win over Durham-based Matthew Watson to set up a last-eight encounter with Michael Lawrie, the son of the 1999 Claret Jug winner Paul.

Paterson had been four-up on Watson at the turn before winning the 10th, 11th and 12th to race over the winning line:

He said: “I set a goal of reaching the quarter-finals before the week started so to reach that initial target is very pleasing.

“It’s been tough in the conditions but I’m just trying to keep it simple and let my opponents make the mistakes. Pars will win this week.”

Bellshill youngster Dylan Burt, who became the youngest winner of the prestigious Cadzow Cup last season, underlined his title credentials with a 2&1 win over No 2 seed Rory Franssen.

And Kirkhill kid Lewis Irvine bolstered local numbers in the quarter-finals with a 5&4 win over the fifth seed, Callum Bruce.

Ranfurly’s Jamie Stewart saw his hopes dashed, though, after a 2&1 defeat to Edinburgh’s Eric MacIntosh.
