MORE than quarter of a century after ring legend Nigel Benn first wowed Glasgow fight fans, the son of the former two-weight world champion is set to follow in his old man’s footsteps.

Teenage light-welterweight Conor Benn has earned a slot on the undercard of Ricky Burns’ forthcoming WBA super-lightweight title showdown with Italian Michele Di Rocco at the SSE Hydro on May 28.

Benn, who made a winning pro debut on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s world title win at the O2 Arena last month, grew up in Australia.

But he knows all about his dad’s ring wars in Glasgow, where Benn senior stopped Mbayo Wa Mbayo in 1989 and out-pointed Mauro Galvano four years later in a world title defence.

And the 19-year-old hopeful said: “I want to box all over the country, so going to Glasgow and boxing on Ricky’s undercard will be a huge honour for me.

“I’m just a baby in the sport starting out, but I’m relaxed and I don’t feel any pressure. I’m just going to be myself and do it my way.

“My Dad backed me and next thing I knew I was walking out at The O2 in front of 20,000. It’s been an unbelievable journey so far and I’m still pinching myself.

“I only had 20 amateur fights and came here to the UK with the intention to stay amateur for three more years, which is what my father wanted me to do, but I then decided to turn professional.”

Burns’ world title clash will also feature Glaswegian Willie Limond against Tyrone Nurse for the latter’s British super-lightweight crown and Commonwealth games hero Charlie Flynn in his first title action.
