Russell Knox held his nerve superbly and drained a 12-footer for par on the final hole to win the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship and bolster his late Ryder Cup qualifying bid.

Knox went into the final round trailing by three shots but on a final day which saw Jim Furyk post a remarkable 58, the Scot found himself two clear of the field courtesy of back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th before eventually winning by a stroke with a final round 68 for a 14-under par tally.

At the aptly named River Highlands course, the exiled Highlander won by a single shot from the veteran, Jerry Kelly.

The win ensures Knox joins World No. 1 Jason Day, US Open winner Dustin Johnson along with Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott as a double winner on this year’s 2015/16 PGA Tour wraparound schedule following his success in November's WGC HSBC Champions event.

Victory has seen Knox vault up the Ryder Cup World Points list and is now right in the hunt for a place in Team Europe with a couple of events still to play before the August 28 qualifying deadline.

"I tell myself every day I'm good enough to win tournaments, it's been an enjoyable ride, " he said after holing a par-putt on the last and flinging his baseball cap off the green in triumph.

Knox endured a nervous finish to affairs and could look back to the 15th and 16th holes with a bit of fortune when his second shot and tee shot respectively stopped agonisingly short of finding water around the two greens.

He did bogey the 16th and then sent his tee shot right into rough at the last. Knox showed all his skill and resolve, however, to salvage his par and seal a huge victory.
