SPEEDWAY'S British Champion wants to become the King of Ashfield - by becoming the fastest man ever around Glasgow's circuit.

Danny King - who sensationally won the country's top title in June - leads his Ipswich Witches side north as they bid to become the first team to beat the Tigers at home.

King - who turns 30 on the day - is in the form of his life, having produced world-class performances at the British Grand Prix in July and when winning a silver medal in last month's Speedway World Cup for Team GB.

But now he's focused on getting the Witches into the Premier League play-offs, starting with this weekend's showdown with the high-flying Tigers.

King said: "We are confident coming to Glasgow with three ex-Tigers in our team.

"We are on a good run of form at the moment and it's a track that we all like. We certainly know how good Glasgow are at home though, so it's going to be a very tough test for us - but we are up for the challenge.

"It's a very fast circuit. I had the track record before they changed the shape - so I would love to make a start in heat one and try and get it back.

"The match is very important for our play-off hopes. We need to pick up points away from our last four away meetings as well as winning all our remaining home fixtures.

"We certainly have made it hard for ourselves, but with the team we have, I believe it is possible to still make the play-offs."

King - who'll be joined at Ashfield by former Glasgow men Ben Barker, James Sarjeant and Joe Jacobs - admits it's been his best season yet.

He said: "The achievements I have had this year are unbelievable - it just goes to show you should never give up and always work hard.

"I have loved being British champion and when I get introduced as that, it spurs me on. But it's no more pressure as I always believe you can only do your best, and I always try to do that in every race - I can't do any more than that."

Glasgow are boosted for the meeting by the return of reserve Danny Ayres, who has been declared fit after suffering a broken wrist.

Tonight at Plymouth, the Tigers employ Tom Bacon as a guest for Ayres, before visiting Rye Hose tomorrow.
