CYCLING star Sir Bradley Wiggins has been confirmed to compete in the Tour of Britain which begins in Glasgow on September 4.

The 2012 Tour de France champion, who won his eighth Olympic medal with a triumphant gold in the team pursuit in Rio this month, will race for his eponymous Team WIGGINS squad.

He will be joined by fellow GB team pursuit gold medallist Owain Doull, who it was announced last week will take on a new role as a stagiaire in selected races for Team Sky before turning pro full time on the road in 2017.

Jonathan Dibben, riding his third Tour of Britain, has also been confirmed in the six-strong Team WIGGINS line-up. The remaining three riders will be named closer to the race.

The trio will join the likes of Mark Cavendish, Andre Greipel and Steve Cummings on the start line for Britain's biggest professional cycle race which gets under way at George Square in Glasgow a week on Sunday.

Stage one of the eight-day race will travel south through Scotland to finish in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway.

Tour of Britain race director Mick Bennett said: "We are delighted to be welcoming two of our Olympic champions to the Tour of Britain just three weeks after their success in Rio.

"As a former winner of the Tour of Britain it is always a pleasure to welcome Sir Bradley Wiggins back to Britain's biggest race, while Owain Doull was the star of the 2015 Tour, showing he has a very bright future ahead of him."
