Paul O’Hara may have missed out on the M&H Logistics Scottish PGA Championship title but the Lanarkshire golfer still has his eyes on a few more prizes.

The 30-year-old Motherwell ace was pipped to the national crown in a play-off at Gleneagles yesterday by Edinburgh-based Welshman Gareth Wright after both players had finished locked on 16-under aggregates over the King’s Course.

O’Hara, who has enjoyed a profitable season on the Tartan Tour, ended the campaign in second place on the circuit’s order of merit and that confirmed his place in next week’s PGA Play-Offs in Devon.

A host of potentially lucrative European Tour invitations will be up for grabs there for the leading finishers and O’Hara is determined to end his season on a high in the shoot-out.

He said: “Coming into the week, my aim was to secure a place in the Play-Offs because I think there were a couple of players who could have passed me on the order of merit.

“I played well all week and didn’t do much wrong at all so I can’t be too disappointed. I’ve really stepped it up this year and have been able to play more because I have finished my PGA training. That showed in my results and hopefully I can carry this on into the Play-Offs and give them a good go. There’s plenty to play for and lots of opportunities on offer.”

O’Hara two-putted from some 120 feet on the 72nd hole for a birdie which got him into the play-off with Wright but his rival struck a decisive blow when the duo played the 18th hole again in the sudden-death decider.

His 6-iron approach from 201 yards came to rest within six-feet of the hole and, after O’Hara had raced his own eagle attempt past the cup before bravely trundling in a birdie, Wright calmly rolled in his eagle three to plunder the first prize of £9000.

Graham Fox, based at the Clydeway centre in Uddingston, hit a 65 to share third on 273 while Paisley’s former Scottish PGA champ Alastair Forsyth finished in a share of sixth on 275. Glasgow’s Paul McKechnie closed with a 66 and forced his way into a tie for ninth.
