High-flying Mike Hammond has praised his Braehead Clan team-mates after being named in the EIHL team of the week.

The former Victoria Cougar enjoyed the brightest of purple patches over an eventful 10-point weekend, grabbing six points and four assists in the process.

To be fair to the 26-year-old Canadian, he has been one of Clan's top performers through an inconsistent campaign, as his 22 goals and 17 assists from 37 games will testify to.

“It sounds great to be given this accolade and it’s very humbling when you consider the great players in the league. It’s nice to be noticed certainly," said Hammond.

“It’s been a great team effort over the last week, with three wins and the team is rolling well.

“I put it down to playing with good players and I have more of a role on the team so I’m trying to take advantage of that. It’s not just our line. All the lines are going and it’s great to see.

“The team’s been behind us all year. They’re easy to play with and sometimes watching Beca and Pitt play together is good to watch also.

“Sometimes we know where we need to be on the ice and we tend to think alike about and are similar players. It makes it easy and the chemistry came together for us.”

Thousands of Clan fans will flock to the Braehead Arena tonight hoping to see the centre add to that telly when arch rivals Fife Flyers come to town.

The game is poised to be a sell-out in as Braehead attempt to their three-game winning streak and strengthen their position in fourth place.

Speaking about Hammond's contribution, Clan hockey and operations director Gareth Chalmers added on Twitter: "Fully deserved, pound for pound the best player in the @officialEIHL.

"Great find by @Finner16 [head coach Ryan Finnerty]."
