BRAEHEAD Clan's Ben Davies is refusing to get carried away as top spot in the league looms into view.

The Glasgow club's tremendous start to the campaign has seen them win five out of their seven league games to go second in the EIHL.

And five victories from six Challenge Cup games has left them just one place behind group leaders Fife Flyers.

A hat-trick of wins over their Scottish rivals last weekend propelled them to within three points of league leaders Belfast Giants, who turn their attention to the Continental Cup as they face off against Europe's elite.

Belfast's break from domestic duty over the next 10 days gives Braehead the chance to move to within one point of their title rivals if they beat Nottingham Panthers tomorrow, and then leapfrog them if they can pour cold water on Coventry Blaze on Saturday.

But despite the prospect of leading the way early on, Welsh forward Davies is not letting the excitement get the better of him.

He said: "We've put ourselves into a great position in the league and we are in good shape in the Challenge Cup too. That's all we ask for.

"Having played a lot of away games at the start of the season we just wanted to try and be up around the top. We'd obviously much prefer to be up there than trying to fight to catch up."

Clan followed up Friday night's 4-3 win over Fife with a 4-0 triumph at Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday before winning by the same scoreline away to Dundee Stars.

It's a treble which gives Davies confidence going into a key week for the club.

He said: "We have big games at home on Wednesday and on Saturday so getting three wins from three against Scottish opponents is huge. Being back in the arena on Friday was a big deal but it was tough getting the win against Fife.

"Jonesy [Clan keeper Kyle Jones] stepped up big for us on Saturday and Sunday with two shut-outs. He was exceptional.

"When you're not conceding any goals it's huge. A lot of the guys stepped up massively."

He added: "We're very tough this year.

"We've got a great defence, a goalie who is stopping shots day in day out and we've got forwards who can score.

"Clan have a very deep line-up just now which is great to see."
