BRONZE ANGEL can be forgiven his weekend trespasses by winning the Betfred Mile at Goodwood.

Marcus Tregoning's five-year-old was disappointing in the International Stakes at Ascot on Saturday, but the ground was probably not quick enough for him as he laboured away in mid-division.

The seven-furlong trip was arguably a hindrance, too, as he is usually seen at his best over farther. No better was that illustrated than in both the 2012 Cambridgeshire and on his penultimate outing at York, where he surged two and a quarter lengths clear in a very strong one-mile handicap.

That victory on the Knavesmire ensured he must carry a 3lb penalty for this assignment, but that still makes him officially well treated in the weights.

Allied to the hot run of Tregoning and the prospect of much brisker conditions on the Downs, Bronze Angel rates a sensible call in a typically ferocious encounter for punters.

Emerging Surrey handler Olly Stevens could have a significant afternoon in his career if Lightning Thunder and Extortionist do what is expected of them.

The former has not quite received the respect she has warranted this term ahead of the Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes.

Runner-up in both the English and Irish Guineas, Lightning Thunder is a seriously good animal.

She may have struggled a little in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, but she was only beaten under four lengths and that race may have been one too many during a busy start to the season.

The daughter of Dutch Art has been given plenty of time to recover from those exertions and has a good chance of toppling a clutch of decent colts given her fillies' allowance.

She will also love competing on the fast ground at Goodwood.
