BRAEHEAD CLAN came up just short as Sheffield Steelers pipped them to the Elite League title by a single point.

The Glasgow side went into the weekend knowing they needed to win both their remaining games, while hoping other results fell in their favour.

And despite recording an emphatic 9-4 win over Hull Stingrays on Saturday night at the Braehead Arena, Sheffield refused to slip up to claim their first league crown in four years.

With Cardiff Devils winning on Sunday against Nottingham Panthers, it meant Clan needed to also triumph over Fife Flyers to secure second place and a Champions Hockey League spot for next term.

They did just that as goals from Neil Trimm, Ben Davies and Stefan Meyer netted a 3-2 win in Kirkcaldy.

The weekend's grand finale to the Elite League campaign means Ryan Finnerty's Braehead will go up against Hull in the play-off quarter-finals this week.

If the Glasgow side make it through, they will then go down to Nottingham a week on Saturday for the play-off finals weekend for only the second time in their history.
