Renfrewshire golfer Colin Edgar holed a 30ft putt on the first play-off hole to stay on track for Scottish Boys' Championship glory at West Kilbride yesterday.

But the Cochrane Castle teenager needed a late reprieve in his third-round tie against Gourock's Daragh Cuddihy.

Edgar had been one down playing the 18th and was heading for the exit door when Cuddihy putted out for par to seemingly secure victory. There was a twist in the tale though.

Edgar said: "Someone noticed he had not replaced his marker in its original place after moving his ball that was in my line. I was awarded the hole then I won the 19th."

The 17-year-old began the day with a nine and seven win over Alistair Wood from Auchterarder. But his early victory was almost his undoing.

He said: "Because I'd finished early I went home to Johnstone for a sleep but on the way back there was an accident on the road and we had to go another route. I thought I would miss my tee-time."
