SPANISH ace Fernando Alsono will leave Ferrari at the end of this season, the team's ex-president Luca Di Montezemolo has confirmed.

The driver's decision has been anticipated for the last couple of weeks in the wake of Sebastian Vettel revealing he was leaving Red Bull.

Ferrari have not yet confirmed they'll link up with the reigning world champion but that now seems all but certain.

Di Montezemolo, who resigned from Ferrari last month, said: "He is leaving for two reasons. One, he wants another environment. Two, he is an age when he cannot wait to win again."

Alonso, 33, was world champ in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. He joined the Italian team in 2010 and finished runner-up to Vettel in three of the last four seasons.

But he has not won a race this season. A move to McLaren now seems to be the only option for Alonso, possibly in place of the 2009 champion Jenson Button.
