Top seed Ewen Ferguson survived an early scare in the opening round of the Scottish Boys' Championship at West Kilbride.

The Bearsden teenager, who won last season's British Boys' Championship, was forced all the way to the 18th green for a narrow one-hole victory over battling Newton Stewart youngster Robert Hughan.

Ferguson said: "He was a real battler and never gave up but I managed to keep my cool."

Drumpellier youngster Innes Fergsuon joined his namesake in the second round draw but had to go the full distance and more before seeing off Jack Cummins of Uphall.

Ferguson, last year's Lanarkshire Boys' Strokeplay champ, eventually won at the 22nd hole of a tight tussle.

Cochrane Castle's Colin Edgar, a winner on the SGU Junior Tour earlier in the year, dumped Orkney's Michael Schinkel 4 and 3.
