The Giffnock North AC member has had a great year on a personal basis as he develops into one of Scotland's best young talents.

Traynor won a national cross country title in February, took a bronze at the Olympic Stadium in May in the British Universities Champs and has now been selected by Team GB for the Euro Cross Champs in Hungary on Sunday week.

Luke, 19, will represent Britain in the Under-20 Men's race with another Glaswegian, Beth Potter, selected at Under-23 Women. Three other Scots made the team – Rosie Smith, Scott McDonald and Rhona Auckland.

It is great news for Giffnock North and coach Dudley Walker – and the Caledonian University student never lets down his team as he proved through the summer when he competed in hurdles, high jump and javelin to help earn points for the club.

"It is great to be representing Team GB and NI and I am looking forward to the trip to Budapest," said Luke. "I feel as though a lot of things have happened for me in 2012 and this tops it off really.

"Back in February I won the scottishathletics Cross Country title at Under-20 at Falkirk and then a couple of months later landed a bronze in the 10,000m in the Olympic Stadium in London at the BUCS champs.

"I also ran in an age group Diamond League race in Birmingham at 3000m at the end of August. But pulling on that vest will be great and I've been watching highlights of last year's Under-20s on video just to give myself an idea of the standard and the opposition.

"Great Britain won team medals in every age group last year apparently so there is a wee bit of pressure attached. We gather next Friday and head to Hungary for the race on Sunday, December 9."

Giffnock North AC are catering for dozens of new athletes in the wake of in-terest after the Olympics. Find out more:
