Beth Potter has had to adopt tunnel vision to land a Great Britain athletics vest for the first time in almost three years at the Euro Cross Country champs in Hungary on Sunday.

And the Bearsden girl fears she will be training in the Clyde Tunnel pedestrian/cycle passage come the Festive period to beat the icy weather.

Loughborough-based Potter is one of five Scots involved in the Euro event for Team GB and NI in Budapest as she competes at Under-23 level. When home for Christmas, she will train with former club Victoria Park-Glasgow and expects to join her sister in a bizarre location.

"I have never trained in the Clyde Tunnel myself, but my sister Sarah did last winter when the weather was so bad you couldn't run on the roads or in the parks," said 20-year-old Beth.

"My old club, VP-Glasgow, went there for sessions to avoid the ice and snow and I will be there as well over Christmas and New Year if the weather is bad.

"There's a big Cross Country event in Edinburgh on January 5 which I want to prepare for."

First up for the former Milngavie and Bearsden Amateur Swimming Club champion is Hungary this weekend.

'I am really looking forward to Budapest – I wish it was Sunday already," insisted Potter.

"I've not worn a GB vest for a while so it is nice to be back. It was the World Cross event in Poland in 2010, in fact, and I ran with what turned out to be a stress fracture. I am still not sure how I got round.

"Touch wood, I am feeling ready this time. GB have a very strong team at Under-23 level. I had a bit of a nightmare on the track through 2012 following illness and changed my coach.

"Mick Woods has vast experience and, at the Liverpool trials, the senior men was the only race where one of Mick's athletes didn't win gold. Tapping into that kind of knowledge is so helpful and hopefully there will be a benefit for me."
