ANDY MURRAY waded into the row over Spain's appointment of female coach Gala Leon as their Davis Cup captain by insisting the situation was handled "horribly".

The Scot - who chose Amelie Mauresmo as his coach earlier this year - had congratulated Leon on Twitter last month when she was announced as Carlos Moya's successor.

But Rafael Nadal's coach and uncle Toni then said her appointment could create problems "at dressing room level" because she had "zero relations" with the players.

Murray said he had spoken to some of the top Spanish stars and added: "It sounds like it was handled horribly.

"It seems the Spanish Federation and the players were not getting along before the appointment. None of the players were consulted about who the captain was going to be.

"They had wanted Moya to be the captain last year but then they didn't play.

"So the federation were like, 'If you are not going to show up, we will pick whoever we want'.

"So it was a bit messy. Regardless if it's a man or a woman, communications between the players and federation were not there."

But Murray insisted: "I'm more than happy to work with a man or a woman, providing there is a relationship and an understanding between you when you speak about tennis and the things you need to work on. That's very important."
