Andy Murray eased into the quarter-finals of the Valencia Open with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Fabio Fognini.

The third seed made it 15 wins from his last 17 matches in his quest to qualify for the World Tour Finals in London.

Today he'll play South African Kevin Anderson, who was given a walkover by Martin Klizan.

Murray did not face a break point against Fognini and lost only two points on his first serve.

It was the pair's first meeting since April, when the Italian beat Murray in Naples to help his country reach the semi-finals of the Davis Cup.

But he never troubled Murray in a one-sided encounter.

The Scot had not been at his best in a comfortable victory over Jurgen Melzer but he was much sharper against Fognini, serving and hitting groundstrokes better and capitalising on his opponent's many errors.

He broke serve immediately and went on to win the first four games before taking the first set.

Fognini looked frustrated after being unable to turn a half-chance in the fourth game of the second set into a break. Murray took advantage by breaking the Italian in the next game and held serve to book a date with Anderson, who he beat at Wimbledon in June.

If the Scot wins he is scheduled to meet David Ferrer in the semi-final in what would be their third clash in as many weeks.

The top seed clinched a 6-3, 6-2 victory over his fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco and will meet Thomaz Bellucci next.

Murray overtook Ferrer in the race to London with a final win over him in Vienna on Sunday.

That was revenge for the Scot after Ferrer had won their match in Shanghai the previous week.
