Andy Murray fought back from a set down to defeat Jerzy Janowicz 6-7 (11/9) 6-4 6-2 and book his place in the second round of the China Open in Beijing yesterday.

Murray looked out of sorts in the opening games, perhaps a reaction to his efforts on Sunday when he defeated Tommy Robredo, of Spain, to win the Shenzhen Open - his first tournament victory since winning Wimbledon last year.

The Scot (pictured right) lost his first three service games to go 5-1 down.

However, he rallied and reeled off five straight games to move ahead for the first time in the match, before the giant Polish No.1 held to take the score to 6-6.

The tie-break was hotly contested with the duo matching each other all the way until Janowicz found a way through to win 11-9.

It meant that if he were to win, Murray would need to battle back from a set down for his third match in a row.

The second set went on serve until the ninth game, where the sixth seed broke Janowicz to take a 5-4 lead before claiming the set 6-4.

It meant the match went into a decider and an early break for Murray saw him go 3-1 up, before another saw him move 5-2 ahead and just one game away from a place in the second round.

Murray then served for the match and claimed a battling victory in a match time of two hours and 28 minutes to line up a second-round meeting with American John Isner.

World No.1 Novak Djokovic eased into the second round with a comfortable straight sets win over Guillermo García-López. The top seed saw off the Spaniard in just over an hour to win 6-2, 6-1 as he goes in search of a record fifth China Open title.

Rafael Nadal is also through after beating France's Richard Gasquet 6-4 6-0. It was Nadal's first singles match in three months following a wrist injury.
