SWIMMING:

Duncan Scott insisted he was pleased with his week's work despite failing to grab an individual medal at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing.

The Scots teenager finished sixth in the 100m freestyle final in a time of 49.96 secs but will not head home emptyhanded from China, having helped Great Britain claim gold in the 4x100m men's freestyle relay.

Scott, 17, said: "I was happy to dip under 50 seconds for my last 100m freestyle of the season. It was a tough race and I knew I would be up against it.

"I gave it everything and my time shows that. I am obviously disappointed not to win an individual medal but I am really happy with how I've swum and, of course, the gold medal."

Scott's last swim of the event came in the mixed 4x100m medley, where the British quartet came home in sixth place.

ATHLETICS: Joanna Butterfield smashed the club throw record to win gold yesterday at the IPC Athletics European Championships in Swansea.

Her success capped an amazing debut season in the event for the athlete, who also stars for Glasgow's wheelchair rugby side Caledonian Crushers.

Butterfield's throw of 17.68m in the F32/51 final smashed a 13-year-old European record.

She said: "I can't believe it. I'm new to the sport and still have so much to learn,

"But I know that I can throw further. Now I want to get a gold at the world championships next year in Doha, Qatar."
