Cawder ace Jamie Savage claimed a notable scalp in the first knock-out round of the Amateur Championship at Royal Portrush yesterday.

The Glasgow teenager overcame highly-rated Frenchman Julien Brun on the final green to book a spot in the last 32.

Brun had shown his potential two years ago when he trumped the professionals to win on the European Challenge Tour in his homeland.

But it was Savage, the winner of last month's Irish Open Strokeplay, who produced the amateur dramatics yesterday as he battled to a narrow one-hole victory.

Savage said: "Winning the Irish event gave me a real lift and proved that I can do it at this level. He was a very good player and it was a good match. It was close all the way but thankfully I just managed to hold him off."

Savage will now face Englishman Mark Geddes, who ended hopes of an all-Scottish clash by beating St Andrews Links Trophy winner Grant Forrest 2 and 1.

Savage was one of five Scots to overcome the first hurdle and he will be joined in the second round by Connor Syme, James Ross, Chris Robb and former Scottish Boys' champ Bradley Neil.

But Ayrshireman Jack McDonald, a semi-finalist in the 2012 Amateur Championship at Troon, joined the early casualty list.
