GLASGOW Tigers chiefs say they're remaining upbeat despite their stuttering start to the season continuing at the weekend.

The speedway side went down 55-37 at Berwick Bandits on Saturday night - though the performance of 18-year-old rookie Dimitri Berge provided a major positive for the visitors.

It's now two defeats from two in the League Cup, but the Tigers still have a full complement of home fixtures to complete in the competition after another rain-off at Ashfield yesterday.

Their only home match this season has been last month's challenge fixture against Edinburgh.

Co-promoter Colin Hamilton said: "I think the highlight from Saturday night was the performance of Dimitri.

"He is showing that he's eager to get to grips with Premier League racing and his heat win was great.

"He was on the pace with his other rides as well and we're very pleased with him.

"He's started off better than we thought, and he's always wanting to do more.

"As a team, there are certain areas that should be performing better and these guys know it. But I saw the effort myself they were putting in in the pits - changing bikes and trying things.

"Maybe the lack of track time is going against them a little bit.

"We're still upbeat. It's early days, but we definitely know the areas we need to concentrate on to get better.

"We want to see them get some more meetings under their belt to get a proper opinion on it. I don't think we can put it down to anything in particular at the moment."

Despite a promising first heat 3-3, Tigers were left chasing the match from early on.

The reserve pairing of Anders Thomsen and Kasper Lykke couldn't overcome the home side's Liam Carr and Steen Jensen in heat two and the hosts went four points ahead.

Berge won heat five, but Tigers No.1 Kevin Wolbert ran a last, meaning they made no inroads into that gap.

And in the next heat, former Tiger David Bellego continued his impressive form, powering to a 5-1 along with Kevin Doolan.

When Bellego won again in heat eight to put his side 10 points up, Glasgow's hopes faded.

Theo Pijper and Anders Thomsen did manage to claw two points back for Glasgow when using the double-points tactical ride in the ninth race, winning that 5-3.

But that was as far as it went in terms of heat advantages for the Tigers as Berwick ended clear winners.

Berge finished the night on six points, just behind Glasgow's top scorer - captain Pijper - who got seven points.

The Bandits had been due to take the Tigers on in Glasgow yesterday in the return leg.

However, the match at Ashfield was called off just after 2pm following heavy rain, which made the track unraceable.

It was the Tigers' second postponement in as many Sundays following last week's washout for the Workington fixture.

Hamilton added: "We're very disappointed - two rain-offs in a row is not great for any speedway club - and we just have to regroup and get back on track next week."
