WORLD number one Tiger Woods is taking a long-term view of his return to action and thinking about "the next 10 or 15 years, not the next 10 weeks", his agent says.

The winner of 14 golf majors missed his first Masters in 20 years this month after surgery on his back on March 31.

Agent Mark Steinberg said: "He's getting to the point of light chipping and putting and the doctors and trainers seem to be pleased with where he is.

"He is on schedule but we don't know what that schedule means. I don't know when he intends to be playing competitively but I expect it to be this summer."

He added: "This is about the next 10 or 15 years, this is not about the next 10 weeks. This is not about targeting any specific tournament. If he needs to wait one or two or three extra weeks, he will."

Swimming: 18-time Olympic swimming champion Michael Phelps says worry about his weight was behind his return to the sport.

The American, 28, retired after winning an unprecedented 22nd Olympic medal at London 2012, but confirmed his comeback earlier this month.

He will swim the 100m butterfly event at the Mesa Grand Prix on Thursday.

At his heaviest he was 2st 10lb above his competitive weight.

"Getting back into shape was the number one thing," he said.

Cycling: Team Sky will be without Great Britain's Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome for next month's Giro d'Italia, which starts in Belfast.

Froome has opted to prepare for the defence of his Tour de France title. Wiggins will enter the Tour of California in May.
