GLASGOW Tigers captain Theo Pijper has put his testimonial off until the start of next year.

The Dutchman had planned to hold the event at Ashfield Stadium on September 28, with the permission of the club, to celebrate more than a decade in British speedway.

However, the 34-year-old has been forced to postpone it until next season as many of the riders he had hoped would race are likely to have other commitments.

Pijper said: "As we approach the date we had set, it has become clear that there is so much going on in speedway that it wasn't going to be easy for riders to confirm that they could come.

"There's a long track grand prix in Germany, and I would have been keen to have some of these guys over, plus the Premier League play-offs will be in full swing by that time. The fixtures for that are not known yet, so no-one can say where they might be.

"I'm grateful to everyone who has offered to support the meeting so far, I hope they will still be happy to do so when we stage the meeting at the end of March next year."

A party night which had been planned for a Glasgow venue on September 27 will still be going ahead, with tickets available at both Glasgow and Edinburgh. Fundraising events will be staged over the winter.

formula one: Fernando Alonso would appear to have confirmed his intent to remain at Ferrari, despite McLaren's interest in luring him back to Woking.

With Honda powering McLaren again from next season as the Japanese manufacturing giant returns to Formula One after a seven-year absence, they had hoped to attract a stellar name.

"From summer last year there has been a lot of talk," said Alonso. "But from my mouth came nothing about any interest to leave Ferrari, or saying I would join another team.

"It's not my intention at the moment to move. As I've said, I want to win for Ferrari here and finish the job we started some years ago."
