RYAN FINNERTY knows his Braehead Clan did not deserve to go top of the league at the weekend.

But the defiant head coach still has the belief that is exactly where his team will be when it matters this Sunday.

Just two games remain in the Elite League season with Clan one point behind leaders Sheffield Steelers.

That could have been so much different if the Glasgow club had taken advantage of the Yorkshire side's 6-3 slip up away to Cardiff on Sunday.

Instead Braehead also suffered a shock defeat of their own, going down 2-1 away to the Edinburgh Capitals.

It was a below-par performance from Finnerty's team who failed to score in 10 power plays created against their lowly opponents.

Now Clan must rely on winning their last two games while hoping both Sheffield and Cardiff drop a game each.

It may be a tough ask, but the head coach remains positive after one of the most frustrating nights of the season.

He said: "We had 10 power plays and didn't score from any of them and I would say that's the biggest reason why we didn't get any success from this one.

"If you can't get those, then you don't deserve to win any hockey game.

"We're left on the outside looking in right now, but we can still do it.

"The situation isn't any different to last week as we close in on the remaining games.

"We had an opportunity to take it forward, we didn't seize it and we've got to win out to give ourselves any kind of chance."

Finnerty must now quickly rally his troops ahead of the visit of Hull Stingrays this Saturday if they are to have any chance of clinching their first ever league title.

The defeat was particularly painful for supporters, who had travelled through in their hundreds to Murrayfield on Sunday.

However, head coach Finner admits it was a big blow for the players as well.

He added: "It's hugely disappointing and it's a tough loss to take.

"We had problems executing and getting the transitions and when we did, we found Tomas Hiadlovsky in goal in good form.

"He had a great game for Edinburgh, but we didn't do enough to score goals from our point of view.

"They didn't outplay us by any stretch, but our failure to execute, get inside and get on the rebounds cost us and they scored timely goals."

Only a handful of tickets remain for Saturday's visit of Hull to the Braehead Arena, in what is Clan's penultimate game of the campaign and one of the most important game in the club's history.
