GLASGOW Tigers captain Theo Pijper admitted there were no excuses after another heavy loss to Edinburgh Monarchs.

The Ashfield side are still waiting for their first win of the season - and were never really close to finding it against their Scottish rivals in the League Cup.

The visitors led from the off with a 4-2 heat advantage while four 5-1 scores in the first half of the meeting sent them far into the distance.

Tigers No.1 Kevin Wolbert failed to score from four starts, while veteran Mark Lemon scored just one.

Glasgow's Danish reserves also struggled, scoring four between them.

Pijper, whose haul of seven was half of what he scored at Armadale in the first leg on Friday night, was visibly downbeat about the result.

He said: "I don't know what happened. On Friday, me and Kevin were flying and suddenly - I don't know.

"I struggled in my first ride because I had the wrong sprocket on. I changed a little bit on the bike and I was getting going.

"But after that, it was already lost. I don't think we've had enough track time yet. But that's not an excuse - we need to be on the ball. There's no excuse for anybody. It just needs to happen."

One highlight for the Tigers was the showing of French teenager Dimitri Berge, who top scored with 12 - his best performance yet in Glasgow colours.

Pijper added: "He's started off very well, so hopefully he can continue that.

"It's very important for us. It's a big gamble to put somebody in with not much speedway experience, but he looked awesome.

"I'm trying to help everybody. It just needs to happen."

It was Berge who split the visiting pairing of Craig Cook and Aaron Fox in heat one. Edinburgh then went further ahead with 5-1 wins in heats two and four.

Team manager Stewart Dickson tried to reduce the deficit by putting Rusty Harrison out on a tactical ride in the fifth heat, but he couldn't overcome Craig Cook and Aaron Fox, before Sam Masters and Justin Sedgmen kept the Edinburgh bandwagon going with another 5-1.

Berge helped claw some points back in heat eight when winning on a tactical ride for a 7-2 to the home team, but that was the only dent his team could make into the deficit.

Glasgow now look to the start of their Premier League campaign on Thursday at Redcar.
