GLASGOW TIGERS are looking to benefit from the World Cup-winning psyche of the Germans as their star No.1 rider looks to adopt the clinical mentality of his illustrious countrymen.

Revin' Kevin Wolbert, the first German rider to race for the Tigers since former world champion Egon Muller back in 1972, had a slow start to his season with Glasgow.

However, he has been showing some much-improved winning form in recent weeks.

Now, buoyed by the worldwide acclaim on the back of Germany's World Cup win and excitement in his home nation, Wolbert is determined to take a leaf out of his country's footballers' books and translate that to his own approach to racing for the Tigers.

He said: "Such a successful event, played out on the world stage, has been a huge boost back home.

"Everyone is talking about the World Cup success and each of the footballers have become national heroes.

"I'm proud of what my country has achieved, and the professional and hard-fought way in which it was achieved.

"I d like to fight for position and points when I race. However, I feel that I can perhaps make some improvements in my preparation generally - both on and off-track - which will make me more effective, quicker and harder to beat.

"I've been pleased with my recent form, I feel plenty quick and have beaten some very good riders at Glasgow.

"I know I can get better yet, and that's what I'm focusing on to help the team."

The Tigers return north to face Premier League basement club Sheffield Tigers at Ashfield on Sunday - racing commencing at 3pm.

The South Yorkshire Tigers are now managed by Glasgow's former skipper and club No.1 Joe Screen, who has retired from racing and switched duties to the other side of the fence.

Screen will bring his new side to Ashfield in search of an away win which would lift them off that bottom place.

Sheffield are led by Simon Stead, who this week was named in the Team GB side who will compete in next weekend's Speedway World Cup event in Norfolk.

Tigers drew 45-45 away to Ipswich Witches last night and will travel to face Plymouth Devils tonight.
