Laura Robson has been ruled out of Wimbledon after opting to have surgery on her injured left wrist.

It is a major blow for the tournament and the British No.1, whose run to the fourth round last year provided one of the biggest stories of the fortnight.

The 20-year-old, who will also miss the French Open, suffered the injury in pre-season training and has not played since losing in the first round of the Australian Open in January.

Writing on her Facebook page, Robson said: "I have decided to have minor wrist surgery at the Mayo clinic with one of the best wrist doctors in the world, Dr Richard Berger.

"Dr Berger is confident I will be able to return to the tennis court, pain-free, before you even have time to miss me. Sadly, I will miss the French Open and Wimbledon."

Wrist injuries are among the most problematic in tennis and Dr Berger is the surgeon who has twice operated on Juan Martin del Potro.

A torn wrist tendon also proved one of the most serious injuries of Andy Murray's career, with the Scot missing the French Open and Wimbledon in 2007.
