CELTIC had a comfortable 3-0 victory over Aberdeen in the Betfred League Cup Final last month, but their Old Firm rivals Rangers have lifted the League Cup trophy on more occasions than the Parkhead men…

DAVE (Cove) Since Celtic beat Rangers in the semi-final of the League Cup I have been trying to tell some Celtic fan pals that Rangers have a much better record and Celtic’s record in League Cup finals is rubbish. Can you give me some details to support my case?

It depends how you look at it. Rangers have the superior record with 27 wins from 34 finals (9 wins against Celtic) compared to Celtic’s 16 wins from 31 finals (5 wins against Rangers).

Celtic do, however, have a remarkable record of reaching 14 successive finals from season 64-65 until 77-78.

A record that may never be equalled never mind beaten.

During that 14-year run Celtic also set a record of five wins in a row (65-66 to 77-78) and also the record for consecutive defeats (4 in-a-row) from 70-71 to 73-74.

Celtic are also the highest scorers in the League Cup final – 7-1 v Rangers (58-59), 6-2 v Hibs (68-69), 6-3 v Hibs (74-75).

Hope these facts are useful to you.

PAUL BYARS (Glasgow) Can you provide details of a match played on Christmas Day in the 1960s between Celtic and Morton? I believe Celtic won by a huge scoreline.

Played on Christmas Day, 1965, Celtic delivered a feast of festive goals, demolishing the Ton by eight goals to one in front of around 21,000 fans at Parkhead.

The deadlock was broken in the 7th minute when Joe McBride neatly headed home from a Jimmy Johnstone cross.

Stevie Chalmers then doubled the lead when he drove the ball past Erik Sorensen four minutes later.

Morton completely fell apart from the 25th minute onward, as Celtic fired another four goals in just eight minutes to give them a 6-0 lead by the 33rd minute.

McBride scored the third goal with a powerful volley, before John Hughes scored a brilliant individual goal from long range after skipping past three Morton players.

McBride then completed his hat-trick when he swept home a Gemmell cross, and then Murdoch made it six when he smashed home from well outside the box, which Sorensen didn’t even move for.

Chalmers then added another two minutes before half-time, following an outstanding through ball by Murdoch, giving Celtic an incredible 7-0 half-time lead.

Hal Stewart managed to organise his shell-shocked side for the second half, and they pulled a goal back on the 49th minute through Craig Watson, however Hughes restored the seven-goal advantage when he skipped past two Morton players before firing home from close range with 10 minutes to go.

Celtic would go on to win the first of their nine league titles in a row.
