BARRY FERGUSON is baffled that Matt Phillips is not already a fixture for Scotland after declaring the West Brom winger a potential match-winner.

The 26-year-old has been named in Gordon Strachan's squad to face Canada and Slovenia this month, as he enjoys a blistering campaign with the Baggies.

He has struck five goals in 26 appearances since his £5m switch from QPR last summer.

Phillips is in line to win his first cap since October 2012 - a fact that mystifies former Scotland skipper Ferguson, who played alongside him at Blackpool between 2011 and 2013.

He said: "He has gone to West Brom and played very well this season and there is no doubt he is a very good player.

"Matty is one of those frustrating playeres. I played with him at Blackpool and he is quick, strong and has really good ability.

"He is a confidence player and he needs to be playing in a team where they are winning games.

"But I've always liked him and am surprised he has not been in many of Gordon's squads. He can win you a game."

Meanwhile, Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic insists Tom Cairney's Scotland call-up is richly deserved.

Cairney, 26, has been rewarded for a superb campaign with the Cottagers.

The Fulham skipper has scored nine goals this term as they eye a late promotion push, but Jokanovic admits the recognition is a double-edged sword, given that Cairney has already played 39 matches this term.

"He absolutely deserves it and we're really happy for him," said the Craven Cottage gaffer.

"It means we'll have less time to rest him, but he has to be satisfied as it's some compensation for his team and himself.

"He brings many things to the team. He's a player who has fantastic confidence in himself and can score goals and make assists in the position."
