SCOTLAND defender Charlie Mulgrew is a doubt for June's World Cup qualifier against England after being stretchered off during Blackburn Rovers' defeat to Reading on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old former Celtic and Aberdeen centre-back sustained an ankle knock and was replaced eight minutes into the 3-1 Championship defeat.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray admitted that Mulgrew will require a scan on the injury, but the news will be of concern to national team boss Gordon Strachan with Group F leaders England set to visit Hampden Park on June 10.

“I think Charlie will need to go for a scan or an x-ray," said former Celtic manager Mowbray.

"It looks like he could be struggling a little bit, but I shouldn't really comment until we investigate more I think.

“He is obviously on crutches so we'll have to wait and see.”

The manager also admitted that the loss of his centre-back, who started in Scotland's games against Canada and Slovenia last month, had an impact on his side's overall performance.

He said: “They didn’t score any great goals, we have to defend crosses in to our box better than we did.  Whether Mulgrew going off was part of the reason, it probably was.

“It’s football, we have to take it on the chin and move on to the next one.”
