DIXIE DEANS will be remembered by many for his penalty shootout miss against Inter Milan in the semi-final of the European Cup in 1972, but Deans was a prolific goalscorer during his time with Celtic

DANNY Q (via email) – The first Scottish Cup Final I went to was in 1972. Celtic beat Hibs 6-1, and Dixie Deans scored a hat-trick. Who scored Celtic’s other goals? I’m sure Kenny Dalglish got at least one, but my brother disagrees. Who is right?

Your brother is. Kenny Dalglish did play in this game, but didn’t score. Celtic’s goals came from Deans (3), Macari (2) and McNeill.

JIM THOMAS (Bearsden) – I recall seeing ex-Scotland striker Ted Macdougall scoring against Rangers in a pre-season tournament at Ibrox around 1978. But who was he playing for? I think it may have been Norwich or West Ham.

It was Southampton. Rangers won this game 4-1. It was the final of the Tennent Caledonian Cup. Ted got the Englishmen’s consolation goal. The Rangers scorers were Russell, Parlane, A Forsyth and MacDonald.

MARY DEARIE (Milton) – When I was a young girl my older brothers took me to Firhill to watch Celtic play Partick Thistle, I think it may have been in 1938. I returned home from the game battered and bruised because every time Celtic scored my brothers would bash me on the head in celebration, all in good fun of course. I cannot recall the score line but if I’d have counted the lumps on my head I know it was high scoring. Do you have any information of the game I am referring to?”

The game was dubbed “football power at its peak” as Celtic overwhelmed their local rivals by 6 goals to 1.

The star player on the day was Francis Murphy, who scored Celtic’s third and was involved in a further three goals, all in the first half.

The opener was scored by Johnny Crum, and the second by the great Jimmy Delaney with a header; both assisted by Murphy.

Delaney scored his second, and Celtic’s fourth, again a result of a move down the left channel orchestrated by Murphy.

Thistle grabbed a late consolation through John Wallace, but after a missed Thistle penalty Celtic sealed their impressive victory courtesy of a further two goals by John Divers and Charles Geatons.

Willie Maley’s Celtic won the League that season, lifting their 19th First Division trophy, and Partick Thistle finished 7th.

Your brothers had much to celebrate, hope the head has recovered.
