FORMER Rangers and Motherwell boss Stuart McCall admitted he was gutted after his Bradford side lost the League One play-off final to Millwall at Wembley. A late goal from Steve Morison sealed the victory for the Londoners, although the subsequent celebrations were marred by a pitch invasion.

McCall said: “It felt like a crucial goal and it obviously was. I thought we dominated the possession with more than 60 percent while they put us under pressure from corners and free kicks. But I don’t think our goalkeeper has had a save to make.

“So there are fine lines between success and failure. I could easily be standing here as a victor but it’s no surprise that the two lads who combined for their goal, Steve Morison and Lee Gregory, have been the best striking partnership in the division for the past two years. We had done well with them up until then – kept them in check – so it’s just gutting for everyone. In the cold light of day we’ll look back and think it’s been a terrific season with a lot of highs and fantastic memories. But today we failed and that’s sore.”

McCall wasn’t happy with how the pitch invasion was handled. He added: “The 40 or 50 stewards who came on at the end could have come on 10 minutes earlier. Simple. Get to the halfway line and stop it. I understand they can’t stop people from coming on the pitch but they can form a line on the halfway line to stop them encroaching into our bit. Why do they want to do that? Just go and enjoy it with your own players. Don’t come over to goad us. “

Bradford midfielder Nicky Law felt the scenes weren’t quite as bad as at Hampden after last year’s Scottish Cup final between Rangers and Hibs. He said: “They seemed to get it under control quite quickly. It’s a shame to see but it was probably a minority. A lot of their fans were booing as well. So it was disappointing. They’ve won the game and they would have wanted to celebrate and not have things like that overshadowing it. But it got well-handled and they got them off the pitch quite quickly. It’s more disappointing for us as we would have liked to thank our fans.”
