JIMMY JOHNSTONE is regarded by many Celtic fans as their greatest ever player, but surprisingly only won 23 caps throughout his career for Scotland

COLIN (Parkhead) – It is often said that although part of the 1974 World Cup squad Jimmy Johnstone was not selected due to some misbehaviour in Norway en route to West Germany yet I seem to remember Willie Ormond attempting to introduce him late in the final game against Yugoslavia.

Indeed Jinky was one of five substitutes in the match in Frankfurt and Ormond tried to replace him for Martin Buchan on 85 minutes shortly after the Yugoslav’s had taken the lead.

Despite the linesman’s best efforts the referee failed to notice this and Johnstone soon returned to the bench shortly before Joe Jordan’s last-minute equaliser.

This would certainly suggest there was no ban as such on the player taking part and he won his final two caps later that year against East Germany and Spain.

JOHN (Castlemilk) – Can you tell me how many home Scots played against England at Wembley in 1983 and were there any players from Rangers in the team?

The match was played on June 1, 1983. There were eight home Scots in the team.

Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish, Willie Miller and Gordon Strachan from Aberdeen.

We also had Richard Gough, David Narey and Eamon Bannon from Dundee United.

There were no Rangers players in the team. The other home Scot was Charlie Nicholas of Celtic.

Frank Gray, Graeme Souness and Andy Gray completed the starting eleven.

England won the game 2-0 with Robson and Cowans scoring.

PETER (Dens Parker) – I remember my team beating both members of the Old Firm in the space of a couple of days back in the early 1980’s. Can you give me the details ?

Dundee played Rangers at Ibrox in a Scottish Cup quarter-final replay on March 17, 1984.

Dundee won the match 3-2 with goals from Smith and a double from Ferguson.

Then three days later on March 20 they beat Celtic at Dens Park in a league match by the same scoreline of 3-2.

A McCall double and a third from Stephen virtually ended Celtic’s title hopes for that season.
