SCOTLAND'S wait for a return to a major tournament goes on after the latest heartache in attempting to qualify for Russia 2018.

A final day draw to Slovenia ended Scottish hopes and saw Gordon Strachan lose his job, but it was far from the first time the Tartan Army felt the sting of coming close with no reward.

France '98 was the last time the Scots made it to a major finals, with an entire generation having no memory of seeing their country on the global stage.
