STEPHEN Robinson today backed Motherwell to overcome Celtic in the Betfred Cup final next month following their 2-0 semi-final triumph over Rangers yesterday.

Brendan Rodgers's men, who beat Hibernian 4-2 in their last four match at Hampden on Saturday, have now gone 60 games undefeated domestically.

But Robinson, whose side booked their final place on November 26 thanks to two second half goals from Louis Moult, believes his charges can cause a huge upset.

"It would be nice to beat them, wouldn’t it?" he said. "Somebody has got to beat them. Why not us?

"First and foremost we have to stay up. You have to remember where we are and what we are. We’re a club which is building and getting stronger.

"We have good solid foundations now. But we know we must stay in this division first and foremost and anything else is a bonus. We have started well, we’ve had a good run, but we can’t drop our standards otherwise that changes very quickly.

"But you saw yesterday, the belief gets more and more as the game goes on. They know they are fitter and stronger than other teams.

"They have a togetherness and a real solidarity within the club, not just the starting eleven. Throughout the 20 players there are no big time Charlies. So that gets you where you need to go. We’ll just show up on the day and do what we do."

Robinson was sent to the stand by referee Steven McLean in the second half along after a disagreement with his opposite number Pedro Caixinha on the touchline.

“The ref has a hard enough job without me and Pedro making it harder to be honest," he said. “It was a big game for everyone and was passionate. I have a lot of respect for Pedro so it wasn’t a personal issue.

“He thought one of our players should have been sent off as I thought one of his players should have been in the first half. It was silly of me to do that, but it’s about the players and not me.

“It was horrendous watching the game from the stand – but I think Stephen McManus (Motherwell first team coach) is fitter now than when he was a player running up and down the steps changing shape 50 times for me. But I shouldn’t have been up there.”
