AC Milan have sacked head coach Vincenzo Montella and replaced him with former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

Montella was under pressure after an indifferent start to the Serie A season despite spending more than £200 million on new recruits during the summer.

A 0-0 draw at home to Torino on Sunday proved to be the final straw and the former Sampdoria and Fiorentina boss was dismissed on Monday with the Rossoneri in seventh place.

Club legend Gattuso has stepped up from his role as youth team coach to take charge of the first team.

The 39-year-old, who spent one season with Rangers in 1997/98, has previously held coaching roles with Sion, Palermo, OFI Crete and Pisa.

A club statement read: "Milan announce the dismissal of Vincenzo Montella as head coach of the first team.

“The technical operation is entrusted to Gennaro Gattuso, who leaves his post as Primavera Coach and to whom we send the warmest wishes.”
