SCOTLAND star Andy Robertson has described Liverpool’s stunning Champions League quarter-final win over Manchester City as the best moment of his career so far.

The left-back starred for the Reds as they triumphed 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday to record a 5-1 aggregate win over Pep Guardiola’s star-studded side.

Robertson has enjoyed a rapid rise, having suffered a 2-0 loss to Annan Athletic with Queen’s Park in League Two on the same date five years ago in front of just 242 fans.

He then had spells with Dundee United and Hull City before completing an £8 million move to Anfield last summer, but when asked whether Tuesday’s European triumph was the highlight of his career so far, he was in no doubt.

"I would say so,” he told Liverpoolfc.com

"Getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League as a wee boy you grow up watching these tournaments and you think what it’s like to play in it.

"We’ve just knocked out one of the best teams in Europe at the moment. Luckily we’ve managed to do that and we are in the semi-final.

"Hopefully I’ll get a chance to play in the games and lead this club back to a final - and hopefully a sixth Champions League!"

City knew they needed to be quick out of the blocks to stand a chance of overturning a 3-0 first leg defeat and they got off to the ideal start when Gabriel Jesus found the net after just two minutes.

Guardiola’s team continued to dominate the first half, but second half strikes from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino ensured that it was Jurgen Klopp’s men who were celebrating at the full-time whistle.

"The first half was tough going,” said Robertson. “We knew they were going to come out attacking and we had to ride our luck.

"A couple of their chances could have gone in and if it did it could have been a different day, but we knew we couldn’t play worse than that.

"We defended quite well but we had to get the ball down and play our own game, and in the second half we managed to do that.

"Mo [Salah] pops up with another goal and that’s the tie over and we went on and won the game, which is brilliant. But over the two legs I think we deserved it and we are in the semi-final."
