THERE aren't many reasons to look on the bright side after a 6-0 defeat to Celtic.

And Nathan Eccleston reckons the only plus point for Partick Thistle was that they didn't lose by more on Wednesday night.

Alan Archibald's side crashed to a one-sided derby drubbing in the East End as their League Cup dreams turned into a nightmare.

After John Guidetti fired the Hoops in front and Stuart Bannigan saw red for a first-half lunge on the Swedish star, it quickly went from bad to worse for the Jags.

Emilio Izaguirre doubled the Hoops' advantage just after the break before Guidetti ended the night with a hat-trick and Leigh Griffiths bagged a brace.

Eccleston said: "As you would expect, everyone is down after what happened and the result. We got what we deserved in the end.

"Regardless of the fact we were down to ten men, we didn't perform in the second half and we expect better from ourselves.

"Everyone is disappointed, but we have to put it behind us and focus on Saturday now and look to put it right.

"We are disappointed. We had to go about our jobs in the right manner and to get beat 6-0 is unacceptable.

"We were still in it if we hadn't conceded so early in the second half, but we did and then our heads went down. One thing led to another and they scored more and more.

"The only positive, if you can call it that, is that they didn't score more.

"We were lucky that it was only the six because they could have scored more."

After suffering their heaviest defeat of the Archibald era at Firhill, Thistle must quickly pick themselves up when they return to Premiership action tomorrow.

Eccleston is determined there will be a positive reaction when the Jags face top-of-the-table Hamilton at New Douglas Park.

He said: "The good thing is that Wednesday was a cup game and not a league game.

"There's always another game for you to put things right and thankfully it is coming quickly after a bad result.

"Hopefully we can go there on Saturday and get a better result to get back on track."

Archibald will have plenty of food for thought ahead of the Accies clash as he looks to rediscover a winning formula.

Eccleston came into the side in place of Kris Doolan at Parkhead and started brightly before Thistle capitulated.

And the former Liverpool striker hopes for another run out soon as he bids to make his mark at Firhill.

Eccleston said: "I have been working really hard on my fitness after having no pre-season and hopefully I did enough to keep my place.

"It is another chance for me to go there and show what I can do so hopefully I can keep my place in the team.

"In the four appearances I have had off the bench I have got a goal and an assist.

"The gaffer said that once I was fit I was more than capable of competing.

"The level of competition in and around the squad is good and that brings out the best in you.

"I have not come here to be a back-up striker. I am here to play games and score goals.

"Dools is a proven striker at the club and a proven goalscorer.

"It is about taking my chances when they come along and hopefully I get another opportunity to do that."
