Partick Thistle have signed former Hamilton defender Ziggy Gordon on a one-year deal.

The defender left New Douglas Park upon expiry of his contract at the end of last season, and had previously attracted interest from Poland and been linked with a move to Dundee.

With regular first-choice Firhill right-back Mustapha Dumbuya currently on the sidelines with a long-term injury though, Jags manager Alan Archibald has moved to snap up the highly-rated 23-year-old to bolster his defence.

"It's great to bring Ziggy to the club,” said Archibald. “He has a wealth of experience at Premiership level and I'm sure he'll be a great addition to the squad for the season ahead."

The news is a further boost to Thistle after they managed to retain important first-team regulars like Abdul Osman, Stuart Bannigan and Stevie Lawless despite interest from rival clubs.

Lawless says that the influence of manager Archibald plays a huge part in persuading players to commit their futures to Thistle, and in pulling off signing coups like the capture of Gordon.

“The gaffer’s sales pitch is pretty good,” said Lawless. “He knows what buttons to press with all three of us. He used that to his advantage and got us all signed up.

“We are all quite happy to be here and have all signed two-year deals. We hope we can put in two good seasons and help the club improve.

“[For me] it was just to hear that we are looking to go forward. We have done that each year and had a chance of the top six last season.

“We are looking to try and improve on that and hopefully we can do so.

“I know everything about the club, it’s a great club. It was good to get things signed and we’re looking ahead to the new season now. It was quite an easy decision.”

Lawless is looking to put his off-field problems of the past firmly behind him after the birth of his second child in May.

He is hoping that a settled home life can help his form on the pitch, after breaking his recent habit of only signing one-year deals.

“I’ve just had a second baby so I need to take that into consideration a lot,” he said. “It’s a bit different when you don’t have any responsibilities.

“But that’s my second so I need to buck up my ideas and start thinking about them rather than taking the gamble.

“It’s a little boy. That’s me got one of each now. I’m finished!”
