If Partick Thistle fans are enjoying the displays of Ziggy Gordon they had better savour them, because the right-back may not be around for too much longer.

Gordon is an accomplished player, of that there is little doubt, and what he has been gifted in terms of ability is equally matched by a self-assurance in those talents.

Equally, Gordon is an open book, and he was refreshingly candid when SportTimes questioned him yesterday about whether he sees himself sticking around at Firhill for longer than the one-year contract he signed in the summer.

“Quite honestly, in my mind I don’t,” Gordon said.

“I want to play at the highest level, I’ve never kept that a secret and that’s still where I am.

“This was the best opportunity for me at this stage in my career and I hope to do my absolute best in a Partick Thistle jersey.

“That’s where I am right now, just taking it game by game and I’ll see where that takes me.

“To be honest, I am surprised by the quality in the Partick Thistle squad, purely because I’ve only played against them.

“Now that I see the boys day-to-day and what they can do, I’m very confident in this team. Who knows how far this team can go?

“Partick Thistle are almost like a sleeping giant. If they do well, then the fans will come out and the capabilities are there to be a top six club for the next few years without a doubt.

“The style definitely suits me. They like to play expansive football and they give a lot of freedom in particular to the full-backs.

“It allows me to express myself. I like going forward and I like to put in a tackle, so it’s the best of both worlds really.”

Although his stay at the club may be brief, Gordon has every intention of getting as many minutes for Thistle under his belt as possible.

A threat to that may be the return of Mustapha Dumbuya from the treatment room, one of last season’s stand-out performers who is on the road to recovery from an Achilles injury.

Gordon isn’t worried by that threat to his place, instead insisting that the competition will spur both players on.

“I’ve had a brief chat with the manager about that but that will stay between me and him,” he said.

“I’m very confident in my capabilities. When Mustapha comes back I only hope the best for him, but then again it is a game of self-interest, and I’ll be looking out for myself.

“That will only help the team and Mustapha.”

Gordon got his hands on the Premiership trophy yesterday as the Ladbrokes Trophy Tour stopped off at the Kelvingrove Park Lawn Bowls Centre.

While he conceded that it may be the last time he holds it aloft – this season at least – he has high hopes of a top-half finish in what will likely be his sole season in the red and yellow.

“I’d like to say it won’t be the last time, but when you look at the gulf in finances between the likes of Rangers and Celtic and the rest it will be hard!” he said.

“There’s no reason why we can’t be top six though, that’s our goal and if you look at the way we’ve played this season then no one can doubt that it is a very good possibility.

“It comes down to the quality of players you’ve got, the hard work you put in as a team and the bond you have as teammates.

“People might look at it and say that we’ve lost three on the bounce, but it hasn’t felt like that.

“You’ve got to make sure that the head doesn’t go down after one or two losses, and that’s something that we certainly won’t be doing."
