Ziggy Gordon has never once regretted leaving Hamilton for Partick Thistle in the summer, even when he found himself on the substitute’s bench for a spell last month.

The full-back says he found himself out of the side due to a change of formation made by manager Alan Archibald, and he fully respected his gaffer’s decision at the time.

Now that he has returned to the starting eleven for the last three matches though, he is simply focusing on helping Thistle climb away from the bottom of the Premiership table.

“I don’t regret coming to Partick Thistle, not one bit,” Gordon said. “I’m pleased with the way I’ve handled myself and I’m pleased with my performances since my very first start for the club.

“It’s been very unfortunate that the results haven’t mirrored the performances so far, but that’s the only thing I’m disappointed about.

“I don’t think I had to show the manager what I had in training or anything like that [when I was out of the team], if I’m being honest I don’t think it had anything to do with me.

“The fact was that we were conceding too many goals from all over the park, and he felt that changing formation was the best way forward. He wanted to play three centre backs and I can’t really say anything about that.

“I need to respect the manager’s decisions, but I don’t think it was ever the case that it was anything personal, it was just what was best for the team at the time. I just went about my business as I have always done.

“The manager made it crystal clear when he made the decision that I had done nothing wrong, it was purely for the best of the team and we then started picking up points after he changed the formation.

“So at the end of the day you can’t really argue with that.”

Gordon is hoping that Thistle can turn around their poor record against the top teams in the league with visits to Tynecastle on Saturday and Celtic Park on Tuesday night next up.

His own personal experience of winning against these sides may prove invaluable, with the 23-year-old enjoying some success against them in his Hamilton days.

“I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve beaten Celtic, I’ve drawn against them last season when we probably should have beaten them, and I’ve beaten Hearts and Aberdeen,” he said. “We did so well against the big teams at Hamilton.

“In terms of Partick Thistle you’d have to ask the boys why we haven’t done so well, but there will honestly be no one at the club who will go into these games thinking we’re not going to win them.

“We need a wee bit of luck, we need our most talented players on the ball to give us something extra going forward, and we need to make sure that players like myself and the other boys at the back are doing their job.”

If Thistle do indeed get a slice of fortune in their upcoming games then they will feel that it is long overdue.

Gordon admits there have been times where the Thistle squad have felt as if things were going against them, but he has stressed that hard work is their only sure-fire path out of the trouble they find themselves in.

“We’re doing all we possibly can, we just need some help from some divine entity!” he said.

“I think if luck goes in a circle, we won’t even be close to be worrying, but unfortunately that’s not football and you have to sometimes earn your luck through grit and determination, and there’s plenty of that in this team, I can assure you.”
