Tomas Cerny is urging his Partick Thistle team-mates to maintain their Scrooge-like approach and cash in by racking up the points.

The sixth-placed Jags face another test of their increasingly sturdy mettle tomorrow night when they host fifth-placed St Johnstone in the Ladbrokes Premiership at Firhill.

Thistle are in the midst of an impressive unbeaten run, a spell aided by a four match streak in both league and cup without conceding a goal.

For Czech custodian Cenry, the miserly aspect to Thistle’s performances of late has been particularly pleasing and the 31-year-old is hoping for more of the same when the Saints come marching into Maryhill on Wednesday.

He said: “We started the season with a clean sheet and then for months after that we struggled to do that.

“To have four in a row is very pleasing. As a goalkeeper there’s nothing better so it’s satisfying for me personally but more importantly it’s a big help to the team as a whole. We have been able to pick up the points in the last few weeks and we have gone from the bottom to the top six. When you are not conceding goals, it provides a great platform for the team. The gaffer has been very pleased with how things have been gone. As a former defender, the solid defence has made him particularly happy.”

Thistle continued their unbeaten run with a 0-0 draw at Inverness at the weekend and the point inched them into sixth place on goal difference at the expense of Ross County. Alan Archibald’s team sit eight points behind St Johnstone but, with not much separating those below them, Cerny is not overly concerned about trying to reel in tomorrow's opponents just yet.

He added: “At the moment, it’s about getting as many points on the board as possible to strengthen our position in sixth. That is where we want to be and now that we are there we want to stay there. We are not really focussing on where St Johnstone are in the table just now. We are just concentrating on taking all three points. It'll be a hard task. St Johnstone are a very good team and have been consistent this season so we are anticipating a tough game.”

The early part of Cerny’s campaign was hindered by a foot injury but now that he is back to full fitness, the former Hamilton Accies stopper is relishing being part of Thistle’s renaissance.

He said: “Being injured is never easy and watching games when you just want to be playing is one of the worst things for a footballer. Being injured wasn’t something I was used to and I’m just happy to be back.”

Thistle’s last four league games have spawned two wins and two draws and it was the 3-1 win away to Ross County near Christmas which provided the catalyst for this profitable run.

Cerny said: “That was a key part of our season. We had played well in the two previous games against Hearts and Celtic but the County game was a real turning point. I felt we were getting better and better and that result up there was the proof. It gave us the belief that we could turn things around and that kicked us off on this good recent run.

“We are going well in the league and we are still in the cup. We have a good platform to build upon in the second half of the season. But, in football, that can change quickly so we need to stay focussed.”
