RYAN EDWARDS hopes history-making Partick Thistle can write another chapter in Firhill folklore and end their lengthy wait for three points against Rangers.

The Jags guaranteed their highest league finish in 36 years as they clinched a top six berth with victory over Motherwell on Saturday.

Now Alan Archibald’s side have set their sights on a famous win against the Light Blues when they make the trip to Ibrox this weekend.

A 3-0 triumph in May 1993 was the last time that Thistle beat their Glasgow counterparts but they have turned in spirited showings in the two Premiership meetings this term.

And midfielder Edwards is relishing the chance to give fans another memory to cherish in what has been a terrific campaign at Firhill.

He said: “The confidence is there and we have spoken as a team about taking points off the top teams in the league.

“We got a point at Tynecastle, we beat Hearts at Firhill and we have got a draw at Parkhead.

Celtic have been unbelievable this season so to get that result was remarkable. Now we want to continue that and get a result at Ibrox.

“We would love to end that run against Rangers and hopefully we can do that this weekend.

“If you look at what this team has achieved this season, we have broken a lot of records.

“Kris Doolan has got his 100 goals and we have made history by getting into the top six.

“There is no reason why we can’t continue that and go one step further.

“It would be something special to win at Ibrox but we know that Rangers will be on it after their win at Aberdeen.

“They are going for second and they have got a new manager in charge so they are playing for new contracts and their positions.

“It is not going to be easy. Rangers are one of the best teams in the country but we want to go there and put in a performance.”

Thistle secured their top six spot with 90 minutes to spare as Doolan netted the only goal of the game against the Steelmen on Saturday.

Despite a poor start to the campaign that left them struggling at the foot of the standings, the Jags are now just three points adrift of fifth-placed Hearts.

Boss Archibald has been at the heart of Thistle’s success once again and Edwards reckons a lofty league finish is a just reward for his manager’s efforts at Firhill.

He said: “Everyone in the dressing room will speak highly of the gaffer and Scott Paterson. They have been brilliant for the club and us as a squad.

“It is a credit to the club that they stood by him because we didn’t win a game for the first ten fixtures and the way things go in football these days other clubs could have shown him the door.

“But the club showed faith in him and the players. He was linked with a move earlier in the season and that shows how good he has done.

“All the boys were delighted that they stayed and we wanted to achieve top six for them. Hopefully now we can kick on again.

“It was very pleasing to cement the top six place. It has been our goal to get there so it was good to get it secured, although we could have wrapped it up a bit quicker.

“It will be good to go to Ibrox, it is one of the best stadiums and atmospheres in Scotland.

“We are not resting now, we are three points off fifth and we want to do as well as we can in the rest of the season.

“We have an ambitious group of boys in the changing room and we want to finish the season strongly.”
