TOMAS CERNY insists Partick Thistle will pick themselves up from their Ibrox defeat to ensure they don’t coast through their remaining Premiership fixtures.

Alan Archibald’s side were comfortably beaten by Rangers on Saturday as goals in either half from Kenny Miller and Jon Toral clinched all three points for the Light Blues.

It was a frustrating afternoon for the Jags as they struggled to get going just days after securing their top six status this season.

Midfielder Ryan Edwards forced Wes Foderingham into action late in the first period before Chris Erskine was denied after the break as Thistle looked for a route back into the game.

The defeat leaves Archibald’s side four points adrift of Hearts in the standings heading into the final five fixtures this term.

And keeper Cerny knows they must do better if they are to finish a terrific campaign on a high-note in the coming weeks.

He said: “We have to [still give 100 per cent]. We don’t want to throw away the really good and hard work we’ve put into the season. It’s been an amazing season in terms of finishing in the top six, that’s a big thing for the club.

“We realise the games we’re coming into will be really hard and if we play the way we did at Ibrox I don’t think we’ve got much chance to be successful in those games.

“So we need to regroup and come back stronger and try to put in the best performances we can for the rest of the season.

“You only enjoy football if you play well and ideally get results. If your performances are not good enough then you are not going to enjoy them and you’re going to be disappointed.

“So it’s important for us to regroup. We played at Ibrox and that’s a hard place to come, we know we can play much better and we need to try to in the upcoming games because they will all be really tough.”

Boss Archibald admitted the performance of Cerny was one of the few positives he could take from the derby clash as his side lost to Rangers for the third time this term.

The Czech had little to do in the first half as the Gers failed to find their rhythm but pulled off a handful of stops after the break to ensure Thistle didn’t suffer a heavier loss as their wait for an Ibrox win continues.

It was a low-key affair overall in Govan and the Firhill No.1 was frustrated that the Jags couldn’t hit the heights they have done in recent outings.

He said: “I made four really good saves to keep the score down to 2-0 but it doesn’t take the disappointment from the performance of the team.

“We were a really good run before this game, eight games without losing, and we felt confident we could play well here. I don’t know whether securing the top-six spot last week made us too relaxed.

“That could have gone either way, we could have been really relaxed and played really good football and caused Rangers problems or be relaxed and put in a performance that wasn’t good enough and unfortunately it was the latter.

“We didn’t play very well. Maybe in the first half hour we were comfortable and Rangers found it hard to create anything.

“We probably had more possession but then they had a wee spell when they came into the game, created a couple of chances and managed to get the first goal.

“You then saw their confidence go up and from that point they were the better team, created chances after that and deserved to win.”
