Partick Thistle have announced the departure of striker Ade Azeez, who has joined English League Two side Cambridge United on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The frontman only spent one season of a two-year contract at Firhill, where he found the net just three times despite playing a part in every one of their domestic fixtures.

The 23-year-old scored in just his third outing for the club in a Betfred Cup tie against Stenhousemuir, but despite exhibiting impressive pace and strength on occasion, he failed to find the net again until scoring a header at Dundee in late October.

He found the net just once more during his stay in Scotland, but it was a memorable strike as he scored at Celtic Park to earn the Jags a draw against Brendan Rodgers’s champions.

Azeez said: “I’ve driven down from Scotland with a big smile on my face because I’m really excited to move to Cambridge.

“There has always been a really good feel about this football club whenever I have played here in the past.

“As soon as I had a conversation with (head coach) Shaun Derry and other staff from the club, I knew that this was the right place to come.”

Meanwhile, the club were saddened to learn of the death of one of their all-time greats, as the ‘Firhill Flyer’, Johnny MacKenzie, passed away at the age of 91.

The flying winger made 396 appearances for the club and scored 53 goals after joining from junior club Petershill in 1944, earning nine caps for Scotland in the process and a place in the Partick Thistle Hall of Fame.

Club historian Robert Reid told ptfc.co.uk: “The legendary Hungarian Ferenc Puskas, playing against Scotland in 1954, said he had never before witnessed wingplay of such standard, nor have we as long standing Thistle supporters.

“Thanks for the memories Johnny”
