PAUL PATON today revealed he chose to stay at Partick Thistle because he wants to help lead the Jags to promotion.

The sought-after 25-year-old put pen to paper on a one-year deal last week, ending speculation about a possible summer departure.

And he made his reasons for doing so clear when he said: "I have signed to challenge for the title."

Paton was one of Thistle's most valuable stars last term as he performed with aplomb in defensive and midfield berths.

He has handed the Jags a major boost by signing on the dotted line and hopes Jackie McNamara's side will be involved at the sharp end of the table next season.

"I will be one of the more experienced players in the team next year and I know I have to step up to the mark," Paton said.

"Last season, I didn't think we could challenge but I think we can now, and that is probably the first time I have thought that in my four years at the club.

"The gaffer is so positive and that has spread throughout the team. I can't wait for the new season already."

Paton was not short of suitors this summer after an impressive campaign in red and yellow, with a number of clubs keen to lure him away from Firhill on a Bosman deal.

But the signs were promising in McNamara's first season in charge, with a sixth place finish not reflective of performances, and Paton is convinced they can mount a title challenge this time.

The former Queen's Park star said: "There was never a club in the First Division that could make me move from Firhill.

"Everything about Thistle is positive just now and the gaffer and his assistant Simon Donnelly have had a big part to play in that.

"I can't wait to work under the gaffer for another year.

"There were a couple of clubs that said they would need to wait and see what was happening.

"But I gave the gaffer my word and I wasn't going to go back on that. I am certainly not going to mess about guys who that have been good to me. I was never going to wait, especially after telling the gaffer I'd be staying.

"I want to build my career as a central midfielder. That is where the gaffer sees me playing.

"I felt I had a lot of good performances there last season and I think I have the attributes to play there.

"They have shown belief in me this season, moving me from right-back to a more central position, and I feel more part of the team and more involved."
