ENGLAND caretaker boss Stuart Pearce said his inexperienced side showed "a little bit of naivety" in the 3-2 friendly defeat by Holland at Wembley.

Pearce's first game as England's interim manager ended in defeat as Arjen Robben scored a stoppage-time winner.

Holland struck twice in two minutes early in the second half through Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Gary Cahill and Ashley Young looked to have salvaged a draw for England by netting twice in three minutes, but Robben had the final say.

"We probably showed a little bit of naivety and a slight lack of belief," said Pearce. "Once we'd got ourselves back into the game, we're disappointed to have been beaten, but we learned a lot and that was the exercise."

Substitute Simon Cox netted a late equaliser as the Republic of Ireland fought back to grab a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic at the Aviva Stadium.

Cox came off the bench to slot home after 86 minutes on a night when Ireland were second best for long periods.

Michael O'Neill's first match in charge of Northern Ireland ended in a 3-0 defeat as a deflected opener and two late goals gave Norway a comfortable victory in Belfast.

Rangers striker David Healy started on the bench, but near the end became his country's most-capped outfield player when making his 92nd outing.

Wales were unable to mark the Gary Speed Memorial with a victory as Joel Campbell's early goal gave Costa Rica a 1-0 win on an emotional night at Cardiff City Stadium. Campbell, on loan at Lorient from Arsenal, scored the only goal in the seventh minute.

Lionel Messi struck a hat-trick to fire Argentina to a 3-1 win over Switzerland in Berne. The Barcelona star scored twice in the final five minutes to secure victory.
