ALEX MacDONALD insists Kris Boyd didn’t get the service he required to ensure he didn’t flop at Rangers last season.

The striker scored just 10 times for the Light Blues last term as his dream return to Ibrox turned into a nightmare and Rangers missed out on promotion to the Premiership.

After he was not offered a new deal at the end of the campaign, Boyd signed for Kilmarnock for a third time last week as he looks to rediscover his scoring touch.

And Light Blues hero MacDonald reckons Boyd has every right to be frustrated after he lasted just one season with Rangers.

He said: “You don’t ever lose the ability to score goals.

“You can go on holiday at the end of a hard season, you lie on a beach and go through how you’ve played and how you’ve behaved and worked in training and then you come back better.

“With Boyd, it’s all about fitness I think. I don’t think there’s any questioning his ability. He was unfortunate he didn’t have wingers.

“You can make anybody a scapegoat, but it was just one of those things. If it is not happening for you and if the ball isn’t coming in, you can’t score.

“If you don’t have the bullets, there’s not much point in having the gun.”

With the likes of Boyd, Richard Foster and Ian Black now off the books, new boss Mark Warburton has the chance to rebuild the Ibrox squad this summer.

But Doddie knows the former Brentford gaffer will have to handle the heat if he is to be a success with the Gers.

He said: “The new manager has got to learn what Rangers are all about, just as the new players will have to. As the new goalkeeper (Wes Foderingham) said, they are playing in front of 40,000-50,000 and you can’t beat it.

“He’ll need a few games to find out what it’s all about. The French guy [Paul le Guen] came in and didn’t have a clue. There are videos to watch, but you can’t beat sampling the atmosphere.”
