KENNY MILLER has been the classic impact player in Rangers’ impressive start to the season, coming off the bench to score three goals in two games.

However, the veteran striker is determined he will not become ‘super sub’ as the Light Blues aim to shoot their way back to the Premiership.

Cameo appearances are not on Miller’s agenda. He wants to be a regular starter and feels he deserves it.

He may be approaching 36 and may have missed some of the pre-season work as a result of a calf injury.

However, he feels in good shape now and would love to be given a run in Mark Warburton’s team, staring with tomorrow’s league clash at Alloa.

Miller said: “Anyone who knows me knows that playing bit-part roles is not going to suit me.

“I have missed a few weeks pre-season with a little injury so I have been playing a bit of catch-up.

“But I have come off the bench and I have definitely contributed.

“I feel I should be starting games. I feel I’m good enough to be doing that.

“I certainly don’t want to become the super sub. That’s not a role I want to be taking.”

Miller grabbed a double as a substitute in the remarkable 6-2 win at Easter Road three weeks ago then netted the clinching third goal to see off Peterhead in the League Cup a week later, again coming off the bench.

He missed last Friday’s exciting league opening win over St Mirren due to suspension and became a pundit for the night working for BT Sport.

However, he has been working hard in training and is hungry for the action as Rangers get set for the synthetic surface at the Indodrill Stadium.

Miller said: “I have found myself in a different role in the two games I have come on in by playing on the left.

“But it’s a role I have enjoyed although it obviously helps if you are getting in amongst the goals and the team is playing the way it is playing because you feel there will be a lot of chances.

“It’s just a case of me getting into that starting line-up. I feel ready now.

“I’ve had a taste of it in the first few games and when you get three goals in two games as a striker you just want to keep playing and scoring more – as long as the team is winning.”

Warburton likes to play two wide players and a centre forward up front but there is quite a lot of scope for change with over half a dozen players vying for three places.

Martyn Waghorn has started each match through the middle but seems to be equally useful or even more so when he moves to the right side.

Miller said: “We have a lot of options up front and there is a lot of competition. It’s something the manager is trying to build within the squad.

“I don’t think there is any relaxation about someone taking your slot because there are guys eager to get in if someone is not performing.

“At a club like Rangers you need to have that.”

Tall and lean attacker Nathan Oduwa has added to the mix after he and centre back Dominic Ball joined on loan for the season from Tottenham Hotspur.

Miller knows little about either of them but he benefited from a loan spell with Stenhousemuir when he was a kid so he hopes they can both make an impact.

He said: “We will find out all about them in the coming weeks and months.

“They are young lads who are looking to build their careers and sometimes going out on loan is the best way to do that. I went down that road when I was young player.

“It gives them a chance of coming in and getting a taste of first team action.

“It looks like that they weren’t going to get that at Tottenham this season so it gives them a chance to show what they can do.”

Alloa were undoubtedly a bogey side for Rangers last season as they drew with them three times and sensationally came back from two goals down to knock the Light Blues out of the Petrofac Cup.

They have also re-hired Michael Chopra, the former Sunderland, Cardiff and Ipswich striker who, according to Miller, will have to be watched closely.

He said: “I don’t what it was but they gave us a lot of trouble last season.

“Maybe they raised their game more than normal but they played some fantastic stuff against us last season, scored a lot of goals.

“Sometimes you can get a team like that. Obviously for us it was disappointing – particularly the Petrofac Cup game – but all of that has gone now.

“All the troubles we faced last season are behind us and we have to look forward.

“We’re playing some good stuff and we’re looking forward to the game because it’s another chance to progress as a team.

“There is no doubt that Chops has played at a high level of football and he’s a very clever player.

“He went for £5million when he joined Sunderland from Cardiff so that’s a lot of money and he’s undoubtedly a quality player.

“I’m not sure what his situation is but he found himself at Alloa last season and obviously enjoyed it by going back this year.

“So if he plays he is someone we will need to keep an eye on.

“Sometimes these games are harder than St Mirren at Ibrox or Hibs at Easter Road but it’s a game we are looking to win – and win convincingly.”
