IAN MCCALL was pleased with the performance of his Ayr United side as they equipped themselves well against Rangers last night.

The Honest Men went down 2-0 at Somerset Park as they crashed out of the Petrofac Training Cup but put up a decent showing against Mark Warburton’s side.

First-half goals from Nicky Clark and Barrie McKay clinched the win for Rangers as they continued their fine start to the season and made it five wins from five games this term.

It was a comfortable success for the Light Blues in the end but Ayr could have found the target in the second half as they pushed for a way back into the game.

Boss McCall had no complaints after a penalty claim by Alan Forrest was waved away early in the second half, with the forward booked for diving after going down in front of the home support.

But the United gaffer was proud of his players overall as they get set to return their attentions to the League One campaign this weekend.

McCall said: “I thought the first half we contained them but the second goal was a killer. It was a poor error by us.

“The first was an error as well but you are going to get that when you are playing against good players. In the second half, I thought we were terrific.

“We moved the ball about the pitch and played football. Listen, Rangers could have scored a couple more in the second half but we were certainly due two or three as well.

“I thought we were terrific and to see our right-back running by Lee Wallace and these boys was very heartening.

“It was heartening the way we played and the type of football we played was what we are trying to encourage.”
